Charity Event in Aid of Dress for Success

It feels like November has been a busy month already, but there’s no danger of it slowing down just yet! As well as knitting away to make sure all of your Christmas orders are ready in plenty of time, I’ll be at the IWIRC Event in support of Dress for Success on the 28th November in Central London.

So far Laine’s clothing hasn’t ventured out of the shop’s four walls into the realms of markets, but this charity seemed such a worthy cause that it would have been impossible to say no. That’s why we’ll be donating 20% of all profits made on the night straight to the charity. So what do they do?

‘Dress for Success Greater London is a registered charity that empowers women into the workplace from positions of disadvantage by providing free professional clothing and styling, interview coaching and ongoing support once they re-join the workplace.’

The charity doesn’t just take a ‘dress them up and watch them go’ approach. They provide individually tailored coaching for each and every applicant, including mock interviews and professional guidance, meaning they head to their interview feeling confident in their abilities.

Alongside this preparation runs the foundation of the charity. Stylists provide the women with an outfit chosen specifically for the role she is applying for. The outfit is hers to keep and is made up from new or gently used workwear donated from retailers, big brands and individuals.

In order to make sure that they reach the women who needs them most, Dress for Success have more than 200 referral organisations, who make recommendations of the women who most need this sort of assistance. These organisations include the Department for Work and Pensions, local authorities, educational institutions and other charities such as Crisis and the Single Homeless Project.

With that in mind, I’ll be taking lots of woollen winter pieces with me and hope to be able to make a substantial donation by the end of the evening! Of course that’s not all that’s going on this November. Our workshops are ongoing, with knitting and embroidery classes planned as usual. Alongside our own workshops, we have Christmas wreath workshops held by Web & Farrer which I for one am incredibly excited about! Next week’s blog will be all about Christmas wreaths to get you in the spirit of things.
